The Rea Cheveyo Chronicles: Reza by Rayne Forrest

I enjoy writing. One of the truisms about the business is you should write the story you want to write - for yourself. You'll be a lot happier if you stick to that. I did that when I wrote The Rea Cheveyo Chronicles, and I've never regretted it.

Tonight, as I pondered this blog entry, I got an email from the owner of Whiskey Creek Press. Just a short "heads-up," I still appreciated it. It seems that today, May 29, 2009, The Rea Cheveyo Chronicles: REZA, is the 4th highest rated erotica book at Fictionwise. That's a reader rating, folks.

It was a PrintKey worthy moment. I snagged that screen and filed the .jpg in the REZA folder to smile at later.

The Rea Cheveyo Chronicles has a checkered past, and that's just okay with me. I live to learn, and I learned a lot with those three stories.

I learned how to write a trilogy - and how not to write a trilogy. I learned it was time to cut a few ties - and reinforce others. I learned I should always trust my gut instincts. Today I learned you can't keep a good story down, and that after all these years writing, I can still be pleasantly surprised.

Reza Breen holds the key to unlock the secret to her people's exile on the little planet of Colony. The very name of the people, Yahto, means exile. Or does it?

Decimated by a plague of unknown origin, Reza, a healer, has fought to save the Yahto. Then an act of bravery makes her an outcast with an impossible future. Determined to save her people, she runs headlong into a sexy brick wall named Mick Coulter.

Michael ‘Mick’ Coulter built his career as a crack trouble-shooter. Assigned as the first officer of the Rea Cheveyo, Mick is in the niche he wants to fill until his military career ends in a few short years. Then he's promoted to captain. His first assignment—protect a beautiful, stubborn outcast bent on courting danger.

Getting command of the Rea Cheveyo is something Mick never expected.

Neither is Reza Breen.

EXCERPT

Reza rolled off the bed with an infuriated screech and stormed into the corridor. She rang the chime on Mick’s door, and then beat on it when he didn’t answer. She raised both fists to hammer on the door again when it slid open. Her fists landed on Mick’s bare chest instead.

“Hey, lady!” He grabbed her wrists before she could hit him again. “What the hell did I do now?” He pulled her inside his cabin.

“Let me go, you lorcani!”

He pinned her arms to her sides, holding her tightly as she struggled against him.

“I don’t think that is a term of endearment, is it?” He spun her around and gave her a little push. She landed on his sofa. He quickly held out his hands, palms open.

“Just sit there and shut up, Reza.”

She made a move to jump up and he backed up a step.

“Behave, woman.”

“How dare you put your hands on me,” she spat at him. His eyebrows shot up.

“You hit me first. Or doesn’t that count?”

“It’s not my fault the door opened when it did. Don’t you dare try and blame me for that!”

He moved towards her, eyes narrowed. A jolt of panic shot through her. He looked really angry. She slid across the sofa, trying to reach the other end and flee. It was too late. He pounced, straddling her. She yelled at him.

“Get off me!”

He managed to grab her wrists again. “Settle down.” He grunted as her elbow landed a blow to his stomach.

“Let me go! How can you do this to Shelby?”

“Do what to Shelby?” he growled, hauling her upright and pinning her shoulders to the back of the sofa. “Now be still, woman, or I won’t let go of you.”

She kicked his shin with the hard toe of her shoe. He yelped.

“That hurt!” He slung her over his shoulder. She bucked against him, struggling to break free of his hold.

He carried her into the corridor and unceremoniously dropped her on her bottom on the deck. He glared down at her.

“We’ll talk when you stop beating on me!” He turned and re-entered his cabin. His door began to close between them. She hopped to her feet and charged the door, making it through before it closed. He spun and grabbed her.

“You’re pissing me off, Reza.” He grabbed her and yanked her back to the sofa. He twisted and she sprawled face down across his knees.

His hand descended with some force on her bottom. It stung enough to bring tears of anger to her eyes.

“How dare you!” she shouted at him. She twisted to get away from him and landed on the floor. He was on her in a flash.

She froze as his weight pinned her to the floor. He was long and lean, muscled and all male. And he smelled like clean, fresh snow.

“I’m going to regret this, Reza,” he whispered. His mouth took hers.

Surprise coursed through her, followed by a burst of intense pleasure that quickly gave way to outrage.

Oh, yes. He was going to regret putting his hands on her.

If He’s a Hunk, Where Does He Work?

I was taking a break the other day, and grabbed a quickie read from Fictionwise. And in the middle of this short story, I was struck by the "commonality" of the hero’s line of work.

He was a cop.

Okay. I can do cops. Hey, cops are heroes in my book any day. But it got me to thinking.

If the hero’s a hunk, what is his line of work?

After a short investigation, I came across the following:

If the hero is contemporary or historical, he might be a:
* cop/detective
* fireman
* special/secret agent/spy
* movie, sports, or rock star
* doctor/lawyer
* cowboy
* rich viscount or black sheep son

If the hero is paranormal or fantasy/sci-fi, he’s probably a:
* masterful magician/warlock
* exiled prince/king
* master commander of a vessel
* lord demon/vampire
* alpha man-beast

What? No hunky sanitation workers? No hard and buff garbage collectors? No drool-worthy dog catchers?

I’m not saying there aren’t any sculpted ditch diggers out there with faces that would shame the Olympic gods (I once saw a man working highway construction that nearly made me wreck my car.) But wouldn’t it be interesting to discover in the next book you read that the hero has an unusual, if not totally unexpected, job description?

Erotica versus porn….

Recently I was on a panel discussing this topic. You can click here for a quick overview of what was said. I believe there is a fine line between erotica and porn and you have to be very careful in how you draw it. Erotica is sex with emotion. Porn is sex because it is sex. Pretty bloody obvious isn’t it?

So why do people get all angst ridden over erotica but accept someone having their head blown up or body parts shredded in a book/movie? Is horror more acceptable than sex? I think so. Why? Because we can blame someone or something for horror. We can be sickened and think – ‘that’s disgusting. I would never do that.’ Yet with sex, we may just do that, and this and maybe a bit of the other but we don’t necessarily want everyone knowing our sexual proclivities.

Often friends read my books and smile. They ask - “Did you do what’s written on page 7?” Possibly. Possibly not. Erotic romance is a tease, a glimpse, a gasp, a moment when you can think ‘ooooh’ or ‘ahhh’ as you flip pages. Its fun and it’s funny because sex is just that. Is sex dirty? Sure, if you want it to be. Is sex romantic? Oh yes. Why do we read erotic romance? Because, for a moment, we can zone out into another world where two people – okay maybe three – love the thought of having wild, untamed, emotional sex with each other. Isn’t that why we fall in love?

Demons, Sexy Or Not?

Traditional demons were the bad guys, at least that's what all the Christina mythology surrounding them tells us. Angels good, demons bad.

If you've read much theology or even great literature you know this may not always be true. Angels are not always angelic and demons can be heroes.

But now in modern paranormal/urban/fantasy romance you get lots of demons that are just down right sexy.
Yum, give me a sexy, muscle bound demon over a boring guy any day. Right now I am reading the newest Kresley Cole book, Kiss Of A Demon King. OMG. Can I have Rydstrom? Seriously this demon is one hot male.

Anyway, one half of my double shot of paranormal erotica in Torrid Teasers Volume 59, "The Questioning Concubine", deals with a sexy demon summoned by a witch. She needs answers but all he wants is her.

It's a quick read -sexy, fun, and holds that hint of danger with a bad boy of the worst type no woman should ever want yet we so often do.

Don't we ladies? We always seem to fall for the bad boys, whether they be literal or metaphorical demon, they often aren't very good for us but boy do they thrill us, if only for a little while.

So tell me do you still fall for the bad guys in real life or do you just lust after them in fiction?

And what do you think about demons?

They seem to be rising in popularity in the paranormal/fantasy romance and erotica novels. Are they the next vampire or werewolf?

I think vampires and werewolves are hot, especially vampires but demons do hold a special place in my...heart...yeah that's the place ;-)
Torrid Teasers Volume 59 will be available June 15.

Not Only Are Werewolves Real, but They're Damn Hunky, Too!

I don't usually try to come up with a story based on a specific theme that a publisher is looking for when they put out a "call for submissions." I tend to write whatever storyline pops into my head, so writing on demand about a specific theme isn't really my thing. However, when I first read that Whiskey Creek Press Torrid was coming out with a new line of books called the Men of Alaska Series, there was something about it that immediately captured my attention. I had been wanting to write a werewolf romance for a while, and what better setting thatn the wilds of Alaska? Besides, what's more exciting than a hot, hunky, outdoorsy hero, right?! Once I did a little bit of research on Fairbanks, the story just started to write itself!

I thought it would be more fun for my heroine to be a skeptic, so I made her a reluctant reporter for a paranormal magazine. I knew that would lead to lots of amusing interaction with the hunky hero, who just happens to be a werewolf, of course!

As I said before, I don't usually find myself looking at "calls for submissions" from publishers, but I'm so glad I decided to write for Whiskey Creek Press Torrid's Men of Alaska. Animal Attraction is really one of my very best books, if fact, it was just selected as an EPPIE Finalist.

I enjoyed writing the book so much that a sequel was in the works before I even knew it! It's called Animal Instinct, and trust me, it's going to be just as hot and steamy as the first one. Keep your eyes out for it in June from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid!

ANIMAL ATTRACTION

Not only are werewolves real, but they're damn hunky, too!

Frustrated when none of the real newspapers will hire her as a reporter, Eliza Bradley takes the only job she can get – at a paranormal magazine. Her first assignment takes her to Fairbanks , Alaska to investigate the possibility that a werewolf has killed two local hikers.

She forgets about the story, however, when she meets Hunter McCall, a local college professor and an expert on wolves. The man is an absolute hunk, and she finds herself spending more time in his bed than worrying about werewolves. That is, until Eliza finds out that Hunter isn’t just an animal in the sack, he’s an animal out of it, too - of the werewolf variety! Talk about a complicated relationship!

But Eliza can’t dwell on Hunter’s little shapeshifting issues. There’s another werewolf out there with a taste for human blood, and she and Hunter are the only ones who can stop him.

Excerpt:

“Anything else I can get for you folks?” the waitress asked.Eliza glanced down at the table before looking up at the waitress again. “Ketchup?”

The woman nodded. “There’s a bottle on the table right behind you, sugar. Enjoy your dinner.”

Eliza had expected the woman to bring her a new bottle of ketchup, or at least grab the one off the other table for them, like waitresses in most restaurants would usually do. Maybe it was a diner thing, Eliza thought. Or an Alaska thing. Either way, it seemed she would be going to get her own bottle of ketchup.Taking her napkin off her lap and placing it on the table, Eliza pushed back her chair and got to her feet. When the waitress had told her that there was a bottle of ketchup on the table behind theirs, she had naturally assumed it was unoccupied, so she was surprised to see a man sitting there. And not just the average, run-of-the-mill guy she’d expect to find in a diner either, but a mouth-watering specimen of a man. Her breath caught as she found herself stopping right there in the middle of the diner to stare at him She had read in Cosmo once that there was something different about Alaskan men, that living in the great white north made them more masculine and sexy. Staring at the man seated at the table, she could well believe it.

Thank goodness he was intent on whatever he was reading on the laptop in front of him, because he would surely think she was a freak standing there staring at him with her mouth hanging open. But good heavens, with that thick, dark hair, chiseled, hair-roughened jaw, and wide, sensual mouth, how could any woman not be mesmerized?

Abruptly realizing how idiotic she must look just standing there, Eliza finally forced her feet to move. As she neared his table, the man looked up from his laptop and she felt her breath hitch as his gaze met hers. She’d never seen eyes like his before. Not quite brown, but not really hazel, either, the only way she could think to describe them was gold. And the sexiest pair of eyes she’d ever seen. The heat from them mesmerized her, pulling her into their depths, and suddenly she found it very hard to breathe.

When he lifted a brow in question, she finally managed to break out of her trance. “I, um, was wondering if I could steal your ketchup,” Eliza stammered, her face coloring. “We don’t have any,” she added, glancing back at her table.

The man followed the direction of her gaze, his gold eyes settling on the photographer for a moment before he gave her a smile. “Sure.”

Picking up the bottle, he held it out to her. As she reached for it, her fingers brushed his and she almost gasped as the most amazing sensation swept through her. It was like she’d just gotten completely and thoroughly kissed. Her knees felt weak and there was a delicious little flutter in her tummy that left her breathless.

It was then that she realized she hadn’t actually taken the bottle of ketchup yet. She was just standing there touching him like a dufus. She tried to cover her bizarre behavior by grabbing the bottle, but all she did was almost knock it out of his hand. They both fumbled with the thing for a moment before she finally gained control of it.
Could she be any more lame? She could already feel the heat rushing to her face.“I think your boyfriend’s waiting for the ketchup,” he said when she continued to just stand there.

Eliza’s brow furrowed in confusion at the word “boyfriend,” but then she realized he must be referring to the photographer. She forced her attention away from the pleasant warmth that still swirled between her thighs and gave him a smile. “Oh, you mean Andy. He’s not my boyfriend. We just work together.”

One eyebrow rose. “Really.”

Oh God. Did he think she was trying to come on to him? Crap, she really needed to go back to her table before she did something else to embarrass herself. But she couldn’t seem to make her feet move. She had a crazy urge to reach out and touch him again to see if that same sexual spark would happen. Resisting the impulse, she instead reached up to tuck her long, dark hair behind her ear. “But you’re right. He is probably waiting for the ketchup.”

Giving the man another smile, she forced her-self to turn and walk back to her table. Halfway there, however, she couldn’t resist glancing over her shoulder to take one more look at him. He was regarding her with those incredible golden eyes of his, and her pulse fluttered wildly at the intensity in his gaze.

What was going on with her? She’d never experienced anything like this in her life. She had to get control of herself. Giving him one more look over her shoulder, she turned and stumbled back to her seat in a daze, clutching the bottle of ketchup in her hand.

Across from her, Andy lifted a brow as if to ask, what the hell is wrong with you? When she didn’t say anything he prompted, “You just going to sit there and hold that all night or can I use the ketchup?”

She blinked. “What? Oh, yeah. Sorry,” she mumbled, handing it to him.

Eliza watched as the photographer dumped ketchup on his onion rings, and then began to dig into his meal. She knew she should be doing the same, but she couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened. Her heart was still racing as if she’d just come back from a run. Or had just gotten done having some really great sex. Good heavens, and all of that was from a mere brush of the fingers. She couldn’t keep herself from wondering what it would have been like if he really had kissed her.

It was a long time before Eliza could focus on her food, and by then, she realized she wasn’t really hungry anymore, at least not for food anyway.

"ANIMAL ATTRACTION is scorching hot. I blushed being witness to the sheer animalistic attraction shared by Eliza and Hunter. TRS Gives It 4 Hearts!
"This is a fiery hot paranormal romance that I just loved. It had everything I could ever want in a book -- eroticism, romance, seriousness, humor, murder, mystery, and lycanthropy. Overall the book was properly thought out, the plot is well developed, all relationships build befittingly, and the story flows seamlessly. I read straight through, I just couldn't put it down. The hero and heroine were wonderfully written, memorable, and charming. Eliza and Hunter engage in some sinfully sexy love scenes but even at the most erotic they remained romantic. The secondary characters are solid and fill in the blanks without taking the focus away from the couple. I can't wait to read more from this author. I'm really looking forward to Hunter's twin's story. I have already recommended this to everyone I know who enjoys paranormal romance."

"ANIMAL ATTRACTION was an amazing story! Ms. Tyler has an incredible ability to give life to her characters, and really make the reader feel as if they are in the story. Her descriptions are wonderful, her settings are well researched, and her writing is fantastic.
